The initiative group for collecting signatures in support of the Liberal Party’s candidate for the office of President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu on September 6 filed the subscription lists with the collected signatures to the Central Election Commission (CEC), IPN reports.

Mihai Ghimpu told the press that the PL managed to collect almost 27,000 signatures. He noted it is not hard to collect signatures when you have local bodies and enjoy support among the people. According to him, in some of the regions they managed to collect signatures during one evening.

To be registered as electoral competitors, the candidates for President must submit at least 15,000 signatures collected in their support to the CEC by September 29.

Before Mihai Ghimpu, only the Democratic Party’s candidate Marian Lupu presented the collected signatures, about 29,000, to the CEC. If the signatures are validated, Marian Lupu will top the list on the ballot. Mihai Ghimpu could be the second if no one else submits subscription lists by this evening. A draw is held if two or more candidates file the lists the same day.
