PL says only Romanian speakers should work at state-run companies

The Liberal Party (PL) considers that all the employees of state-run companies should know the official language. MP Valeriu Munteanu, who drafted a relevant bill, has told Info-Prim Neo that they propose amending the Labor Code so as to ban the employment of persons who do not speak Romanian at state-owned companies and companies with majority state holding. “Unfortunately, in Moldova there are many state-run companies. They occupy an important place in the country’s economy and employ tens of thousands of people who do not know the official language. Public money is used for translation and we consider that Romanian should be obligatorily known in the areas where public money is spent,” stated Valeriu Munteanu. He gave as example a company where only two of the 24 employees of the Law Division know Romanian. There are special laws that oblige such categories of employees as the police officers, judges and lawyers to know the official language. Moreover, absolutely all the public servants must know the official language, regardless of the level of the administrative unit where they work. According to Munteanu, the Labor Code should be now also modified. There are 1,500 state-owned or municipal companies in Moldova at present. Most of them provide services for the population. The PL’s bill will be examined in the June 13 meeting of the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunity.
