The citizens of the Republic of Moldova want and deserve independent justice about which they will have no doubt, Head of the Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said in the program “In Depth” on PRO TV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.
According to Pirkka Tapiola, the diplomatic corps working in Chisinau attentively follows the loudest trails and has doubts about the independence of the legal system of Moldova. The examination of the case of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, for example, should be transparent. “A court hearing is seldom held behind closed doors. Usually, the hearings are transparent, except for serious reasons. This trial is of major public interest. The accused persons have the right to a public process. On the one hand, this protects the rights of the accused. On the other hand, the rights of the population that has an interest in this,” he stated.
Referring to the case of mayor of Taraclia Sergey Filipov, who was suspended from post because he cut down several trees, the diplomat reiterated this position that the conviction was politically motivated. “I will not comment on the statements of Ion Druta (president of the Association of Judges who accused Tapiola of interference in the Moldovan justice, e.n.). He stated his opinion. When an elected official is removed from office for several trees, not much imagination is needed to ask yourself questions. The case of the mayor of Taraclia was so evident that we could not refrain from reactions,” stated Pirkka Tapiola.
The Head of the EU Delegation made it clear that the Moldovan justice is selective. Referring to the case of Banca de Economii, he said that all those to blame must be brought to justice. “It’s clear that the billion wasn’t stolen by one person and it is very important that all those who are responsible for this crime be held accountable and selectivity should not be applied,” he said.
