The option to choose the Moldovan language alongside the Romanian one as a working language on the website of the European Commission in the section “Consultations on Europe’s future” is a regrettable administrative mistake caused by a mistaken configuration in the system, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said in a response to an inquiry made by MEP Andi Cristea, IPN reports.

The existence of the “Moldovan language” as a linguistic profile in the consultation process launched by the European Commission was signaled by the MEP this May. The situation was later remedied, Andi Cristea asking at that moment for explanations and specification from the President of the European Commission. In his answer to the Romanian MEP, Jean-Claude Juncker confirmed the existence of a mistake: “The fact that the Moldovan language was mentioned in the online consultation on Europe’s future is a regrettable administrative mistake caused by a mistaken configuration in the system.”

Referring to the received response, Andi Cristea said the European institutions have the duty to always transmit the message correctly, regardless of the context. “The situation concerning the existence of the Moldovan language on the Commission’s website is an administrative mistake that was corrected swiftly, but it is essential for such mistakes to not repeat so that we do not legitimize a series of dangerous narratives,” said Andi Cristea, being quoted in a press release of the official’s office in Brussels.

According to the Constitutional Court’s ruling of December 2013, Romanian is the official language of the Republic of Moldova as it is provided in the country’s Declaration of Independence adopted in August 1991.
