Petru Rotaru named central bank deputy governor

Former Minister of Finance Petru Rotaru was appointed deputy governor of the National Bank of Moldova and a member of the Executive Board. The draft decision was adopted by Parliament on Wednesday, IPN reports.

Asked by MP Vasile Bolea what was the reason for leaving the Ministry of Finance, Petru Rotaru said that he was not forced to take such a decision and he took it based on his own convictions. “The areas are very close. The Ministry of Finance and the National Bank have separate goals, but in essence we all focus on financial stability in the Republic of Moldova. Certainly, any stage in life is important. I think that I coped while serving as minister of finance, but there is always room for improvement,” stated Petru Rotaru.

Vasile Bolea noted that Petru Rotaru is the second minister of finance who is “parachuted” to the NBM. “Obviously, we cannot support or vote for your appointment, including because you didn’t cope with your responsibilities as minister of finance,” said the MP.

For his part, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that Petru Rotaru brilliantly carried out his tasks at the Ministry of Finance, which he had managed since September 2023.

According to the Law on the National Bank of Moldova, the deputy governors are appointed by Parliament at the proposal of the governor of the National Bank. The law also stipulates that the members of the Executive Board are named for a seven-year term, with the possibility of renewing the term.
