Petition: We demand more COVID-19 test kits and tests

The authorities in the Republic of Moldova should follow the model of other states that managed to slow down or stop the spread of the COVID-19 infection, should purchases more test kits and should test the citizens, consider representatives of the Center for Structural Policies and Reforms of Moldova and “WatchDog.MD” Community. This is fully in accordance with the policy pursued by the World Health Organization, which calls on the governments to ensure the testing of persons who are suspected of being infected or who had contact with infected persons as, by testing more people, the outbreaks can be isolated and the transmission of the infection can be halted. The two NGOs signed a petition addressed to Moldova’s Prime Minister, who heads the Commission for Exceptional Situations and the National Extraordinary Commission for Public Health, IPN reports.

The signatories of the petition request the Government of the Republic of Moldova to buy not fewer than 100,000 test kits and to test the persons who returned from countries affected by COVID-19, persons who have been in contact with infected people and those in quarantine; to increase the testing capacity by training the personnel and by creating at least five more laboratories in all the regions; to increase the testing capacity to 4,000-5,000 a day so as to detect persons who carry the virus, but do not have symptoms and to stop the spread of the infection.

The two NGOs said the first supply of 460 tests was used up and they are now using the donated 1,000 test kits. “The authorities made public no statement or intention to buy more test kits. At the same time, tens of thousands of people returned to Moldova from abroad, directly from hotbeds. Other tens of persons interacted or were close to infected persons. The carriers of COVID-19 can have no symptoms. Therefore, the testing for detecting the source of infection is essential,” runs the petition.

The signatories note that COVID-19 is a danger to public health and the Moldovan authorities should not invent new solutions, but should learn from the lessons of those who managed to slow down or to stop the virus. They ask to publish information about the number of available test kits, the number of performed tests by age and locality on the website of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection.

A number of 94 persons infected with COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Republic of Moldova so far. Seven of them are in a serious state. Eight of the patients are children. As many as 38 cases are of import as the persons came infected from other countries, while 54 are cases of local transmission as the persons had been in contact with infected people inside the country.
