Peter Michalko: Recommendations of Venice Commission weren’t respected so as to generate no questions

The recommendations of the Venice Commission and the OSCE about the adoption of the law on the mixed-member electoral system weren’t respected in a satisfactory way that would have allowed to say that no questions are generated, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

The EU ambassador noted that this thing generated particular decisions on the part of the European bodies, such as the imposition of conditionality elements for releasing the macro-financial assistance.

As regards the macro-financial assistance, Peter Michalko said work is now done on the memorandum based on which the €100 million in macro-financial assistance will be provided. The European Union from the very beginning made clear its position that the disbursements will depend on the state of affairs in the field of democratic standards, the existence of a multiparty political system and on the situation of the media freedom. “This is the perspective in which this macro-financial assistance will be offered to the Republic of Moldova,” he stated.

The Head of the EU Delegation also said that the reform process in Moldova generally continues. There are positive developments in the economic sector, as regards economic growth and the commercial exchanges between Moldova and the European Union. “We see that investments are also made. All these should be larger and the foreign partners’ confidence should be thus strengthened,” stated Peter Michalko.
