The justice and rule of law sectors still nee improvements in the Republic of Moldova. These are areas that influence the people’s daily life, but are also important for the prosperity and development of the country, for increasing the investors’ trust and for those who are already active in Moldova’s economic sector, the Head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau Peter Michalko stated in the talk show “Politics of Natalia Morari” on TV8 channel, IPN reports.
According to him, particular phenomena that should be resolved are yet noticed in the justice sector. These are related to the independence of justice and to practices concerning the justice system like, for example, the excessive use of preventive detention measures that exceed the standards and the usual volume in the European countries. That’s why the justice sector reform is supported by the EU. “We will assist the Government of the Republic of Moldova in adopting and implementing this reform,” said Peter Michalko.
As regards the macro-financial assistance that is to come from the EU, the official said that when the first installment will have been provided, the EU will not stop devoting attention to the National Integrity Agency whose efficient activity is one of the conditions for disbursing the assistance. This Agency is also covered by the conditions for releasing the other installments. “For example, the NIA should introduce methodologies. This will form part of the monitoring of the fulfilment of conditions for obtaining financial assistance, but in the broader meaning will also form part of the assessment of the quality of institutions that should be independent,” noted Peter Michalko. According to him, there are big problems related to the very large volume of property statements that were already submitted and that the Agency will have to process credibly and rapidly.
As to the Transnistrian settlement process, the ambassador said particular progress has been made during the past several months. This progress was based on agreements reached earlier. “This phase is one that goes with dynamical steps forward and is also a phase where the national interest of the Republic of Moldova is fully respected,” stated the European official.
