Peter Michalko: For EU it is important that elections take place democratically

For the European Union, it is important that the parliamentary elections of this year take place democratically, without any suspicions that the democratic standards were at risk, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko stated in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

For the EU, it is important that there is certainty that the free character of the elections was observed. “In this connection, the recommendations of the Venice Commissions, most of them, haven’t been respected and haven’t been taken into account when adopting the mixed electoral system. They are also points of reference for the assessment of the electoral process,” stated Peter Michalko.

According to him, the international partners’ attention will be even more focused so as to see if the democratic standards were respected at the elections. “And this refers not to the election day only, but to the whole electoral process,” he said.

As to the reforms, the Head of the EU Delegation said the conditions for doing business in the economic sector have improved, especially as regards the de-bureaucratization, improvement of the inspection system. “It is seen that investments come, but a lot is yet to be done to ensure greater safety for investors so that more investors come and more jobs are created and higher salaries are paid,” stated Peter Michalko.

As to the justice sector, the European official said this is a key one both for the country’s economy and for society in general.
