The first steps taken by the new government are very impressive as regards the determination in the reform process, real implementation of the Association Agreement and attitude to the negative phenomena that appeared in Moldovan society many years ago and developed considerably or in the last few years, such as the bank theft, the unprecedented level of corruption, smuggling and other schemes that have been revealed now, EU Ambassador in Chisinau Peter Michalko was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Friday with Anatolie Golea” on RTR Moldova channel.
“We hope a lot that now the reformation pace and the pace of implementing the agenda existing between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova will be stepped up and will soon bring benefits to the citizens, that Moldovan society will be better and more amenable for its citizens, that society will be much more correct than it was until now and those possibilities provided by the Free Trade Agreement will be fully used and Moldovan economy will develop and exports to the EU and other countries will further grow and investments will come,” stated the diplomat.
As to the justice sector, Peter Michalko said the reform in this sector should be profound and this implies a lot of work. “The essence of the reform is to make Moldovan justice really independent,” he stated.
The EU official noted the laws should be obeyed and some of the proposed bills should be adopted in the nearest future. “Also, there should be strategic documents for the justice sector reform and, surely, this means that the system that influenced the court judgments, that made the judges and the prosecution service dependent should be destroyed and this also refers to the persons who took part in this process,” he stated.
Peter Michalko said the protection of the illegal things and things that should be put right should be no way continued.
As regards Moldova’s prospects of joining the EU, the ambassador said the Association Agreement’s provision saying the EU recognizes the European aspirations and European choice of the Republic of Moldova is very important and opens up doors. “I think the statement that is now contained by the Association Agreement, on the recognition of the European choice and European aspirations, is a sufficient guarantee for developing the next steps in our relationship,” stated the diplomat.
