Peter Michalko: As regards independence of judges, a lot is yet to be done

As regards the independence of judges in the Republic of Moldova, a lot is yet to be done. The improvement of the situation in this regard is now rather important, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko stated in the program “In Depth” on Pro TV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.

The European diplomat consider a number of changes are needed inside the judicial system, including as regards the composition and competence of the judicial bodies that will make sure that the attitude of judges is much more independent.

The European official said the justice sector is a very important one because it is the key area for other spheres of society. At the same time, it is an area that is felt directly by each citizen. “This is important especially in societies in transition like the Republic of Moldova, which undergo this economic transformation with social impacts and the ordinary people should feel that they are equal before the law and that the society in which they live is a just one,” stated Peter Michalko.
