Although essential for agriculture, the use of pesticides carries significant health and even life-threatening risks. 23 people have lost their lives in the last seven years in Moldova as a result of pesticide poisoning. From March 24-30, measures to promote the rational use of plant protection products will be stepped up at national level as part of the National Week to Promote the Sustainable Use of Pesticides, IPN reports.

The National Agency for Public Health says that plant protection products are chemicals used to control pests, plant diseases and improve crop growth. To minimize the risks of poisoning, the use of personal protective equipment, proper management and the promotion of alternative techniques or approaches, such as non-chemical alternatives to pesticides, are encouraged.

ANSP also recommends storing pesticides in rooms inaccessible to children, proper labeling and packaging.
