Persons with suicidal tendencies encouraged to use emotional support services

Counselors and volunteers of the Suicide Prevention Hotline call on the citizens who notice persons with suicidal tendencies to encourage them to call on 0608006623, to write a message on www.pentruviata.md or to ajutor@pentruviata.md where they will be offered free psychological advice. In a news conference held on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day that is observed on September 10, members of the Emotional Support Service of the Suicide Prevention Hotline noted that if the people see a person who does not take care of oneself, shares out expensive things, abuses alcohol and says that no one need him/her, speaks about the date, place and method of suicide, they should help them and encourage them to use the services of specialists, IPN reports.

Liuba Ceban, psychologist of the Suicide Prevention Hotline, said it is important to know that the people, in difficult moments, can be helped. The pain they suffer is very great, but it can be overcome.

The counselors and volunteers of the Service distributed brochures to passersby in the Public Garden “Stephan the Great and Holy”, advising them how to act if they have persons with suicidal tendencies nearby.

Three events to inform about emotional support methods were held as part of the Suicide Prevention Week that has been staged in Moldova during September 6-13. The Moldovans from the diaspora donated $1 to $30 for activities to prevent suicide.

According to statistics of the General Police Inspectorate, 398 cases of suicide were recorded in Moldova in 2020, by 22 more than in 2019. Most of the cases (47) occurred in September.
