The persons put on probation may be monitored electronically. Deputy Minister of Justice Vladimir Grosu told a news conference that the Ministry of Justice intends to implement this monitoring method that is used in many countries. The issue will be discussed at an Eastern and Central European conference on probation that will be held in Chisinau in 2014, IPN reports.

“The persons under electronic monitoring will wear a special bracelet enabling to track movement. This measure will be imposed on persons that are given restrictive punishments by court,” said Vladimir Grosu.

According to the deputy minister, if this method is used, the persons convicted of less serious offenses will be released from prison before time and put on probation.

Attending the event, European Organization for Probation Secretary General Willem van der Brugge said that Moldova made progress in the field of probation and more persons now benefit from this service.

In 2004-2005, in Moldova’s penitentiaries there were held about 12,000 people. Now there are approximately 6,000 prisoners. Since the probation service was instituted in Moldova in 2007, 8,000 persons have benefited from it. Only 70 of them became recidivists.

Probation includes a set of assessment, assistance, psychological counseling and supervision measures aimed at integrating particular convicts into society and protecting them from recidivism.
