A group of persons held in the remand center of the Tiraspol police station are threatened with use of torture as they went on hunger strike, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from Promo-Lex Association. The about 90 persons held in the remand center's basement have been on hunger strike for five days. According to relatives, the given persons are dissatisfied with the fact that they are held in inhuman conditions, are tortured, are not allowed to see the doctor and do not receive the food packages sent to them. The remand center's administration threatened the special services will get involved if they do not stop the hunger strike. According to unofficial sources, the detained persons are subjected to torture. They are hit with hard objects over the fingers, tied to the chairs, beaten with the legs and different objects in the head and other parts of the body. The relatives of some of these persons, who witnessed ill-treatment scenes, have been threatened with rape if they inform the authorities about what they saw. They said the protesters are detained groundlessly for a period of two to six months, suspected of committed crimes that they did not commit. Among those detained is the leader of the Tiraspol youth organization “Youth World” Alexandr Bezrodnii. His mother said that her son is maltreated permanently by the Transnistrian militiamen in order to extract statements from him. The relatives consider Alexandr Bezrodnii was arrested in connection with his professional activities. They said he is not offered medical assistance, while his lawyer is not allowed to examine the case evidence. Promo-Lex called on the Governments of Moldova and Russia to fulfill their obligations towards the victims of the Tiraspol regime, to investigate the given case with the assistance of representatives of Ukraine, OSCE, the EU and U.N. and make sure that the rights of the persons held in the remand center are observed. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Ion Manole, the president of Promo-Lex Association, said the situation remained unchanged. Only the relatives of those detained can provide information. Ion Manole stated that the OSCE Mission to Moldova also asked for details about the incident and intends to travel to the scene.
