Notable personalities of the national culture will render homage to academician, poet, essayist, translator, film director, scriptwriter and documentarist Anatol Codru by a performance of poetry and music on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his birth. The concert “In Memoriam Anatol Codru” will take place at the National Theater “Mihai Eminescu” on December 27, starting at 6pm, IPN reports.

The concert will feature the Osoianu Sisters, “Moldova” Choir, Constantin Rusnac, Cristina Scarlat, Cristina Pintilie, Silvia Goncear and Margareta Nazarkevich, who will sing songs based on poems written by Anatol Codru.

Anatol Codru was born on May 1, 1936, in Molovata Noua village of Dubasari district. After he graduated from the primary school in his native village, he studied at the secondary school in Dubasari town and then at the Language Faculty of the State University of Moldova. Afterward, he attended senior film direction courses in Moscow. When he was a student, he made his debut as a poet with the volume “Blu nights” (1962). He then published six more volumes of poetry.

He distinguished himself as a director of documentaries. In 1971, he started to work at the studio “Moldova-film”. In 1993- 2003, he had headed the Filmmakers Union of Moldova.

Anatol Codru was elected a member of honor of the Russian Film Academy “Nika” and a member of honor of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, the literature and film direction specialties. He was also conferred the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the International Academy of Economic Law and Film Art. He is the first poet and filmmaker born in Transnistria who is famous in Romania as well.
