People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will have representative in Parliament

A representative of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will attend the sittings of Moldova’s Parliament. This representative will be designated by the Head of Parliament. Such a provision is contained in a bill drafted by the working group for examining the problems related to the implementation of the constitutional provisions concerning the status of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, IPN reports.

The group held the last meeting before the MPs’ vacation on July 15. The group’s co-chairman Dumitru Diacov told the journalists that there were drafted three bills. Only one of them was signed and is to be registered in Parliament. It contains amendments to 20 legal acts that will be brought in compliance with the Law on the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia. Dumitru Diacov voiced hope that this bill will be passed in the first reading by the end of the current session.

The lawmaker also said that the other two bills are yet to be discussed in Comrat. One of them refers to the Electoral Code, while the second to the status of Gagauzia.

The group’s co-chairman on behalf of Gagauzia Dumitru Constantinov said that since March, when the group started to meet, no concrete steps have been taken to remedy the situation, but the fact that these meetings are held is, in general, a positive thing.

He added that Gagauzia wants nothing else, but the observance of the legislation on its special legal status. He said they want to have five representatives of Gagauzia in Parliament, but didn’t specify how they should be elected.

The next meeting of the group will take place in autumn.
