The September 13 meeting of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, where the Gagauz deputies were to consider banning the terms Romanian language, Romanian literature, and Romanian history, was put off. According to a communiqué from the local legislature, the meeting was postponed in connection with the celebration of the 224th anniversary of Comrat town, IPN reports.
The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia said the date and hour of the next meeting will be announced later on its website.
As IPN reported earlier, the initiative to ban the use of these terms was put forward by the legal commission of the People’s Assembly, which is headed by Ivan Burgudji. According to him, such a move is dictated by their unconstitutionality as, under the Constitution of Moldova, the official language of the country is Moldovan, based on the Latin script. If the decision is taken, the ban on the use of these terms will be imposed in all the public and state institutions and education institutions of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia.
