The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, in an extraordinary session on January 31, confirmed its vote in favor of holding two referendums on February 2, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué of the Gagauz legislature.
The session was held following a decision of the Comrat Court by which the decisions concerning the referendums taken by the People’s Assembly last year were annulled.
The referendums will take place on February 2. One is consultative, on Moldova’s foreign development direction, while the second one is legislative, on the Gagauz people’s right to external self-determination if Moldova losses its status of sovereign state.
The deputies of the People’s Assembly repeatedly supported these decisions, saying money from personal donations will be used for organizing the referendums.
The People’s Assembly asked the local Central Election Commission to deal with all the procedures needed for holding the plebiscites. About 150,000 people of Gagauzia are expected to take part in the referendums.
