The number of people with disabilities in the Republic of Moldova reached almost 170,000, which is 6.7% of the country's population with habitual residence. Of these, 11,400 are children up to 17 years old. The information was presented by the National Bureau of Statistics on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is marked annually on December 3, IPN reports.

According to a report by the National House of Social Insurance (CNAS), 55.2% of these people have mild disability, 28.4% – moderate disability, and 16.3% – severe disability. Most people with disabilities are between 30 and 45 years old, and men constitute 52.4%. The highest share of persons with disabilities is registered in Șoldănești district (17.3%), Telenești (10.6%) and Edineț district (9.8%).

Most of the people recognized as having disabilities benefit from a disability pension. According to the CNAS, disabled pensioners on January 1, 2024 represented 62.8%, and recipients of allowances – 37.2%.

Every second recipient is a person with childhood disability and almost every fifth is a disabled child under 18 years old.
