A session to inform society about the importance of the global environmental initiative “Earth Hour” and how to attenuate climate change will be staged on the pedestrian street Eugen Doga in Chisinau starting at 7pm on March 30. Also, in the interval between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, the lights in the perimeter of the pedestrian street will be turned off and those attending will listen to guitar and accordion music, will watch a fire show and will admire the Orchestra “Model” of the Carabineer Troops Department.

Contacted by IPN, Ecaterina Staci-Grigorean, head of the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, said that by this event, even if this is a symbolic one, the people are urged to save electric power throughout the years so as to take care of the environment. The event aims to sensitize the population to such environmental issue as the irrational use of electric power, which is one of the causes of the acceleration of climate change that has been more intensely felt during the past few years.

“Earth Hour reminds that each person on the globe, no matter where they are, can contribute to protecting the environment by reducing the excessive consumption of energy not only on this day, but throughout the year,” stated Ecaterina Staci-Grigorean.

The lights in the Government Building will be turned off for an hour on March 30, between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, in a move to celebrate Earth Hour. By this event it is reaffirmed the attention devoted to environmental and energy efficiency issues.

Earth Hour is annually held internationally as a lights-off event. For the first time, the event was celebrated in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Moldova joined in 11 years ago, in 2008. Over 7,000 cities from about 180 countries marked the event last year.
