Compared with the first years of the obtaining of independence, the people now speak Romanian much more literarily and the vocabulary is richer. The conversations are expressive and more diverse, considers Inga Druta, director of the Terminology Center of the Institute of Philology of the Academy of Sciences.

Contacted by IPN in connection with the Romanian Language Day, Inga Druta said particular deficiencies in conversation are yet witnessed in the public and private spheres. The disagreements and syntax errors are the most unpleasant ones. “The more you read, the larger is the number of models of correct speaking of Romanian you learn. Surely, one should want to speak literarily,” she stated.

According to the researcher, most of the mistakes are made in writing. The mixing up of terms is also often met. Even so, many of the young people speak Romanian rather literarily. “When they use Russian or English words, they often do it on purpose, not out of ignorance. It is their way of asserting themselves in society or in a circle of people,” said Inga Druta.

Inga Druta recently reedited the correct expression guide “Speak Romanian Correctly” as a result of monitoring in broadcasting performed at the request of the Broadcasting Coordination Council. The guidebook is available from all the national bookstores and is intended for students, teachers of Romanian and journalists. The book can also be downloaded free on the website of the Terminology Center.
