The People’s Movement Antimafia is putting up tents in the country’s districts for the people to be able to submit petitions concerning the violation of human rights by public servants. The Movement’s members will examine the petitions and will provide legal assistance to the people, while the resonant cases will be made public. In a news conference on October 16, Antimafia deputy head Daniela Bodrug said that the first tent was set up today at 77 Mihai Eminescu St in Calarasi. In three weeks, tents will be pitched in other district centers too. “The mission of the Antimafia Tribunal is to restore the people’s hope that their basic rights, dignity and human values will be defended as the current government and the authority of the law, which is devalued, cannot protect these rights and freedoms,” stated Daniela Bodrug. According to her, their main objective is to identify cases of flagrant violation of human rights and make them public, to inform the competent authorities about the violations and monitor how they solve the case. “The human rights are gravely ignored and the people will be more satisfied when they submit petitions at a tent than when they go to public institutions or to court to seek justice,” said Daniela Bodrug. She gave the example of a woman from Straseni, whose daughter died in unclear circumstances. The Ministry of the Interior established that this case was investigated with violations and requested reopening it only when the Antimafia Movement made the case public. Another case refers to the residents of Mereseuca village of Ocnita district, who were terrorized by the mayor. After information about this case was disseminated, the State Chancellery ordered that the relevant ministries conduct inquiries. The Movement will continue to monitor both of the cases. The persons who will want to file applications at the tents of the Antimafia Movement will have to fill out a form and annex relevant documents. Based on the petitions, the Movement’s members will decide what steps to take.
