The pensioners announced they decided to interrupt the protests in downtown Chisinau at the suggestion of organizer Maia Laguta, the head of the NGO “Salvgardare”. The elderly people are dissatisfied that they have been excluded from the list of persons who travel by public means of transport free of charge and will have to pay a higher fare from October 1 - 2 lei for a trip by trolleybus and 3 lei for a trip by bus. The pensioners warn they will stage wide-scale protests if the municipal councilors do not modify the decision to raise the tariffs adopted on September 15. They demand that they be allowed to travel free of charge and that the rise in water and sewerage charges be annulled. Fewer pensioners gathered in front of the Chisinau City Hall on Friday, the fourth day of protests. They said that many of those who did not come do not have money to pay for the trips. Maia Laguta pointed to the fact that the veterans did not come to the protest. “The veterans are not near us anymore. Who told them not to come?” Laguta asked those attending. One of the protesters brought an improvised permit with the picture and name of Speaker Mihai Ghimpu. The pensioners said next week they will bring masks with the face of the Speaker, the Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca and Prime Minister Vlad Filat. The protesters said they will collect signatures from the persons who are dissatisfied with the Chisinau Council's decisions of September 15, but cannot take part in the protests as they go to work. The pensioners ask the local councilors to allow them to chose between being paid monthly compensations of 70 lei or being issued with permits for free trips valid for a year. The elderly people started the protests on September 29. During two days, the central boulevard was closed for traffic near the City Hall for several hours.
