The State Tax Service recorded an increase in cases of illicit economic activity last year. The tax office reports 2 740 violations in 2024, 13.31% more than in 2023. The total amount of sanctions imposed by the authorities constitutes 4.7 million lei, IPN reports.
The main areas in which economic activities carried out without official registration were identified are trade in goods, including on online platforms, provision of services and passenger taxi transportation. Unauthorized trade is the most widespread, with 1 418 cases found and fines amounting to RON 2.49 million in 2024.
Control actions by tax inspectors continued in the first month of 2025. Thus, 245 new cases were identified in January, with total penalties amounting to 412.9 thousand lei.
At the same time, the SFS carried out five thematic controls last year to estimate undeclared income, uncovering an amount of more than 19.5 million lei not officially registered, which would have generated a tax due of 2.35 million lei.
Tax authorities are urging individuals carrying out economic activities to register legally and comply with the regulations in force. Failure to comply not only carries penalties, but can also lead to the loss of essential rights such as access to social protection and pensions. To facilitate compliance, the Tax Service announces assistance and training seminars for taxpayers.
