Penalties for not speaking Romanian
Thirty taxi agencies in Chisinau have received fines of up to 2000 lei since the beginning of the year for violating the legislation and offering their services predominantly in Russian. Despite the fines, communication with the agencies and with customers happens mostly in Russian and some drivers do not even understand Romanian, although the Law deems it mandatory, reports Radio Chisinau, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
“The administrator of one of the agencies told us in Russian that he saw no problem in the fact that drivers don’t know Romanian. Another administrator explained that Russian was more comfortable for all of his employees”, says the reporter from Radio Chisinau.
In drugstores, many medications do not have instructions for use in Romanian. The head of the Medicines Agency Alexandru Coman claims that the Law allows prospectuses both in Romanian and Russian. However, Agency for Consumers’ Protection contradicts him, warning that drugstores may be fined with up to 3600 lei and importers with up to 10,000 lei. Agency director Alexandru Cuzimuc claims that every inspection uncovers irregularities related to the country’s official language.
According to Alexandru Cuzimuc, citizens’ complaints are few, because people do not insist on the protection of their rights. Last year, there were only 10 complaints, and 4 since the beginning of the current year.
