Pedestrians prevented from jaywalking

The pedestrians who Thursday tried to illegally cross the street at several intersections in the capital city were stopped by a group of volunteers who study at the Transport College in Chisinau. The students formed human chains until the traffic light turned green for pedestrians, Info-Prim Neo reports. Dana Andronic, spokeswoman for the Traffic Police Division, said the given drive precedes the operation “Pedestrian” that will be carried out throughout Moldova on April 8. Student Victor Cantar said he agreed to take part in this campaign as he considers that it is life that matters. He stressed that the reaction of the passersby was appropriate. Another volunteer, Andrei Onescu said he hopes the event will have a positive impact on the people and they will become more responsible. “Most of the times, the pedestrians cross the street in a hurry, amid cars. That's why we have so many road accidents,” said student Victoria Stavila. Natalia Stavnicii, of the Automobile Club of Moldova, said brochures containing the traffic rules are distributed to pedestrians. Passerby Eugenia Budan said such drives are welcome as they emphasis the necessity of observing the rules that should be learned while at school. According to the traffic police, the 455 accidents that happened on the national roads so far this year resulted in 55 deaths and 572 persons injured. Each seventh accident is caused by pedestrians.
