Peacekeeping mission should be changed gradually, reserve colonel
It is now impossible to modify the format of the peacekeeping mission in the Security Zone because such a move implies not only the withdrawal of the armament from the Transnistrian region, but also the realization of the fact that the people living on the right bank of the Nistru do not want an armed conflict, considers reserve colonel Igor Gorgan, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In a press club meeting, Igor Gorgan said that the Transnistrian issue is painful and he feels this pain himself. He is from Dubasari and every time he goes to his native place he has to go through the checkpoints set up along the Nistru.
According to the colonel in reserve, the format of the mission should be changed, but gradually. The constitutional authorities of Moldova already took steps to modify the format, pulling out the military vehicles from the Security Zone, and expected the Transnistrian side to do the same.
“We showed the international community that we do not want an armed conflict. Now we must return to the issue of armament pullout from the Transnistrian region. Why the constitutional authorities could renounce the armament, while the Transnistrian region cannot?” asked Igor Gorgan.
He said that the peacekeeping mission should be modified in several stages. At the first stage, all the guns held by the peacekeepers should be stored in a safe place. The checkpoints should be removed at the second stage as nobody has shot for 20 years and there is no need to keep weapons in the Security Zone.
The last stage would consist of replacing the military men with mobile observers, who do not stay at checkpoints. The Moldovan servicemen took part in peacekeeping missions and Moldova has experience in this field. As a matter of fact, such mobile teams would be less painful than those checkpoints that are needed by nobody.
