The peace-keeping mission in the Transnistrian region is ineffective and the incidents with the school in Corjova and other similar events are a proof to that, stated Radu Vrabie, program director at the Foreign Policy Association, at a press conference on Wednesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. Asked to comment on the statements of Russia's MFA spokesman Andrei Nesterenko, who criticized the intentions to replace the current peace-keeping mission, Radu Vrabie said this position is in contradiction to the earlier statements of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev. Vrabie said he wasn't aware of any plan held by Moldova to attack the Transnistrian region or of any other actions that could cause a military conflict. “Is this peace-keeping mission for the Republic of Moldova, or is it for Transnistria? The newly installed commander of the Russian troops in Transnistria appeared before the leader in Tiraspol to introduce himself, but he didn't come to Chisinau, too. The authorities on the western side of the Nistru know virtually nothing about the peace-keeping troops”, said the expert, adding that the presence of the Russian troops is the only thing that reminds people that there was an armed conflict in the region. Radu Vrabie thinks that an international observation mission would be welcome instead of the current one. “In early 2000 Russia said it wasn't going to withdraw its troops from Moldova's soil because Igor Smirnov wouldn't allow them, but these are mere pretexts to negotiate as many concessions as possible from the EU”, said Vrabie. Andrei Nesterenko stated last week that Russia was upset by attempts to replace the current peace-keeping mission because it could lead to an eruption of a new wave of armed hostilities in the region.
