Peace is the only guarantee for Moldova’s security, opinion

The war in Ukraine reveals the vulnerabilities of Moldova, especially in the energy sector, says PAS lawmaker Lilian Carp. According to the legislator, inflation, insufficient energy resources and cyberattacks are part of a hybrid war waged by Russia against the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, former Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Alexandru Flenchea says that as long as the war continues in Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova is exposed to danger.

According to the former deputy prime minister, the destruction of a Russian missile by the Ukrainian anti-aircraft system over Moldovan territory is an extremely dangerous precedent, as the incident represents an extension of the war outside the borders of the two belligerent countries.

“The G7 approved a statement on this war in which it condemns the Russian Federation for the missile that fell on Moldovan soil. I’d like to believe this is a reaction to the actions of our authorities. This incident is a very dangerous precedent. For the first time since the beginning of the war, the territory of a country other than the two involved in the war was affected by a projectile from one of the parties. Any action we take now to strengthen our defense capability will address the future, not the immediate threats. But today we only have political and diplomatic tools. The only guarantee for our security is peace”, Alexandru Flenchea said during a talk show on Moldova 1.

Political pundit Nicolae Negru, too, describes the Naslavcea incident as extremely serious and suggests that the Moldovan authorities should ask Romania and Ukraine for airspace protection.

“Our neutral status was adopted in 1994 to persuade Russia to withdraw its troops from our territory. But Russia has spat on our neutrality, as it did with Ukraine’s neutrality in 2014. Our security is threatened not because we are neutral, but because Russia has plans for expansion, for remaking the Soviet Union within the borders of historic Russia. Tomorrow or the day after we can wake up with a missile on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, due to error or a feigned mistake out of the desire to take revenge on the actions or statements of the current government”, said the political commentator.

In the same context, the PAS lawmaker Lilian Carp offers gloomy forecasts, saying that the end of the war is still nowhere in sight, and the consequences on the economic and social situation in Moldova are becoming increasingly acute. The MP says that Russia is using the economic and energy crises in our country to try to overthrow the current government.

“Everything that is happening today in Moldova, price surges, the deficit of energy, everything is caused by this war in Ukraine. Unfortunately, we do not see an end point to this war because if Russia finishes fighting, the war ends, and if Ukraine finishes fighting, it will cease to exist as a state. According to Russian logic, everywhere where the Russian language is spoken is the Russian world and must be part of their empire. War is not fought only with the weapon in hand, it has many aspects. We have propaganda, cyberattacks, bomb hoaxes testing the system. With this energy crisis, they are trying to increase the dissatisfaction of the masses in order to overthrow this government and replace it with a pro-Russian one”, Lilian Carp said.

The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier this week announced the expulsion of a Russian diplomat after a missile shot down by the Ukrainian anti-aircraft system fell in the village of Naslavcea, Moldova’s northernmost point, at the border with Ukraine.
