Peace Corps to plant trees in suburban Chisinau Saturday

Peace Corps Moldova will plant 1,576 acacia and oak tree seedlings in Cruzești commune of the municipality of Chisinau on Saturday, in honor of the 1,576 volunteers who have served in Moldova since 1993, IPN reports.

The Peace Corps Moldova Community Forest project is implemented with the assistance of the NGOs Friends of Moldova and Million Trees Moldova. To implement this project, former volunteers raised funds through Friends of Moldova.

Million Trees Moldova will take care of the planted tree during two years.

The Peace Corps’ partners and friends that will plant seedlings will be joined in by U.S. Ambassador Kent Logsdon, Peace Corps director general Becca Sharp, Minister of Environment Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov and other officials.

In 1993, the government of Moldova invited the Peace Corps to open a program in Moldova. the Peace Corps’ first mission was to contribute to improving the English teaching skills of Moldovan teachers. In 1997, Peace Corps Moldova initiated other programs, such as Organizational and Community Development and Education for Health.
