PDM will propose introducing wealth tax

The Democratic parliamentary faction is considering submitting a bill to amend the fiscal system and introduce a wealth tax for persons on high incomes, Deputy Speaker Andrian Candu announced in a meeting with Swedish MPs Kerstin Engle and Carin Runeson, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from Parliament.

Andrian Candu said there are many people in need, but there are also wealthy persons and the difference between them is very great. “We are to set the tax rate and to decide in what cases it will be imposed. It is a proof of responsibility to pay more to the state when you have two cars for example, because you use more public roads and pollute more the atmosphere, unlike the people who use public transport,” he stated.

The discussions also centered on the progress made by Moldova in achieving the European integration objective and on the importance of continuing reforms. “Moldova is now closer to the EU and the people will feel the advantages of this fact after the Association Agreement is signed and the visa regime is liberalized,” said Andrian Candu.

According to the Deputy Speaker, the main objective of the Moldovan authorities is to modernize the country so as to offer the people a European future. A nationwide campaign will be conducted to inform the people about the benefits of the European integration, including at social, economic and political levels.

Andrian Candu said Parliament is making effort to adjust the national legislation to the European standards, including by creating a favorable framework for investors. In this connection, he invited Swedish businessmen to invest in Moldova’s economy.

Lawmakers Kerstin Engle and Carin Runeson said they visited Moldova earlier and have seen the results achieved by the Moldovan authorities meanwhile.
