The Democratic Party (PDM) registered a legislative proposal providing that the victims of political repression will enjoy free trips by public transport. If the law is adopted, local councils will no longer be able to decide on such concessions themselves, IPN reports.
“This year, the victims of deportations from Chisinau learned that they no longer can travel free by public transport. The political repression of July 1949 remains a tragedy for our nation and it is our duty to take care of those who were affected,” PDM president Pavel Filip stated in a press briefing.
He noted that when he served as Prime Minister, he tried to do the most he could for the victims of deportations. A social package for these people was approved in 2018 and the monthly allowance for them was raised from 100 to 500 lei. The financial assistance was increased to 1,000 lei. The deportees started to benefit from rehabilitation treatment at the Government’s hospital.
The PDM banks on the support of all the parliamentary groups in the adoption of this proposal. “I hope we will manage to adopt this law as soon as possible so as to put right an injustice done to the over 2,000 deportees from the capital city,” stated Pavel Filip.
At the end of 2019, the Chisinau Municipal Council excluded the victims of political repression from the list of categories of people who travel free by public transport, arguing the Court of Auditors recommended putting only the categories stipulated by law on this list.
