PCRM will not field a candidate for President

The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) decided not to provide a candidate for the October 30 presidential elections. Such a decision was taken in a meeting of the party’s Political Executive Committee and was motivated by the fact that the Constitutional Court’s judgment to restore the people’s right to choose the Head of State is illegal, IPN reports.

The chairman of the PCRM Vladimir Voronin told the journalists after the meeting that the decrees that will be signed by the new President will be illegal. The Communists call on the people not to take part in the elections.

The politician said not the judges of the Constitutional Court should take a decision as to the direct election of the Head of State, but the people, by a referendum for amending the Constitution in this regard.

Referring to the candidates who announced their intention to run in the elections, Vladimir Voronin said he hopes that none of these will be elected as Head of State.

The candidates announced so far are: Igor Dodon (PSRM), Marian Lupu (PDM), Mihai Ghimpu (PL), Iurie Leanca (PPEM), Maia Sandu (PAS), Andrei Nastase (PPDA), Dumitru Chubashenko (PPPN), Ana Gutu (The Right), Vitalia Pavlichenko (fielded by five parties), and independents Valeriu Giletski, Mihai Corj, Artur Croitor, Ion Dron, and Oleg Brega.
