PCRM welcomes CC’s decision, urges initiating President election procedure
The Communist parliamentary group greeted the Constitutional Court’s September 20 decision. In a communiqué, the Communist Party says that by its decision the Court showed that it is the only supreme authority in the state that is able to defend the preeminence of the Constitution, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The party said that the Court did not allow the political interests to be above the principles of a democratic state of law. The decision brought the interminable discussions on the election of the head of state to an end, thwarted the attempts to substitute the supreme law by an organic law and reproached the political forces that showed complete ignorance not only before the Constitution, but also before the people.
According to the PCRM, the Court’s decision showed that the Constitution is indeed the supreme law that cannot be interpreted as some would like and there is still hope that a true state of law can be built in Moldova.
The Communist parliamentary group considers that the next step aimed at preventing the violation of the Constitution is to immediately initiate the procedure for electing the head of state in order to bring the political crisis to an end.
The Constittional Court Tuesday interpreted Article 78 of the Constitution, ruling that the legislative body cannot institute another majority for electing the head of state by organic law when the Parliament is dissolved repeatedly following the non-election of the President. The decision made is definitive.
