The deputy mayors of Chisinau will be elected by the Municipal Council by a majority of votes at the suggestion of the municipal factions. This provision is contained in a bill registered by the Party of Communists (PCRM) in Parliament, IPN reports.

The authors of the initiative said the legislation adopted in 2006 provides that the deputy mayors are elected by the Chisinau Municipal Council as the suggestion of the mayor general. However, after he was reelected as mayor in 2011, Dorin Chirtoaca didn’t respond to the Council’s request to suggest candidates for the posts of deputy mayors.  Nistor Grozavu and Vlad Cotet were elected in 2007.

The Communists argue that they put forward this legislative initiative in order to avoid such situations in the future.
