PCRM suggests amending Constitution before presidential election according to its proposal
The Communists Party (PCRM) will agree to modifying the Constitution before the election of the President in Parliament, but only in accordance with its amendment proposal submitted earlier. The proposal says that the head of state should be elected by a simple majority of votes, not 3/5 as at present, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The announcement was made by the president of the Communists Party Vladimir Voronin in a news conference on Thursday. If the other parties do not accept the proposal, the PCRM will agree to fielding an apolitical person from outside Parliament, who will be supported by all the political forces, Voronin said.
The Communist leader also said that his party is ready to form a coalition with the Democratic Party if Marian Lupu does not run for the post of head of state. “If Lupu is determined to run for presidency and there are no other candidates, the probability is rather low. If there are other candidates, we agree to discuss,” said Vladimir Voronin.
As to the foreign policy, Vladimir Voronin said the Communists Party will not force the closed or semi-closed door of the EU. He stressed the necessity of establishing a partnership with Russia that will provide for integration into the ex-Soviet area, adding Moldova will enjoy advantages if it joins the Customs Union of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
