The last two elections – the parliamentary and the local ones – showed that the Party of Communists (PCRM) no longer has the previous influence and it is thus looking for solutions to remedy the situation, political analyst Ion Tabarta stated for IPN when asked to pronounce on a possible merger between the PCRM and the Democratic Party, which was foreseen by the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin. The analyst said Voronin wants to keep the party floating, but the sentence for the PCRM was passed and the disappearance of this party from the political arena is only a matter of time.

“Mister Voronin was rather evasive, in his style, and nothing is definite yet. He is trying to maneuver, but what is clear from what he said is that the Party of Communists is history already,” said Ion Tabarta.

He noted that the oscillations of the voters will not follow exactly the oscillations of the party. According to him, even if fewer people voted for the PCRM in the previous elections, not all those who earlier voted for this party support now the PDM. “If the current state of affairs is maintained, we will not have early parliamentary elections and the Democratic Party and the Party of Communists will then be a force together. If early elections are held, I’m not sure that all the voters of the PCRM will throw support to the PDM. These will rather migrate to other segments like the Party of Socialists or such ‘political jokers’ as Renato Usatyi,” said the analyst.

In a TV program, Vladimir Voronin said that in case of presidential elections and if early elections are held, the PCRM could merge with the PDM. He noted he would accept the post of head of state on particular conditions and is ready to form a coalition in Parliament with parties of the center left.
