PCRM candidate: Floods are a consequence of secret agreement between Chisinau and Bucharest
The head of Omega news agency Alexandr Petkov, who is a candidate of the Communists Party for the November 28 legislative elections, says this summer’s floods have been caused artificially as a result of a secret agreement between the authorities of Moldova and Romania, in order to protect the town of Galati from inundation, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In a news conference on Tuesday, Alexandr Petkov presented videos where two children, an old woman and a man say the levee in Nemteni was burst by “Romanians”. According to Petkov, the people in the flood-hit areas are afraid to speak, while the authorities do not open an investigation as they want to hide the truth.
Igor Volnitski, spokesman for Prime Minister Vlad Filat, has told Info-Prim Neo that it is cynical to try to obtain political dividends from people’s sufferings, while the Communists resorted again to lies in order to misinform. The Government of Moldova will continue to support the flood victims, he said.
The Embassy of Romania in Moldova described Alexandr Petkov’s accusations as electoral attack on the Alliance for European Integration, the European Union and Romania. “It is well-known that the EU states where the most active in supporting the Moldovan people affected by the recent floods. The EU, including Romania, sent rescuers, hydrologists, materials and funds in order to contribute to the flood cleanup and help the flood victims,” the Embassy says in a press statement.
