“One cannot become independent overnight and there is no absolute independence. We build the independence together every day because independence is not an abstract notion. It consists of concrete things that we can and should do,” Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated in a festive ceremony staged on the occasion of Moldova’s Independence Day at the National Palace “Nicolae Sulac”, IPN reports.
“We could feel more independent financially if we had a powerful economy that would enable us to depend less on foreign developments. This is what we are making effort to do. We already collect higher amounts into the budget and have a more stable business environment and growing economic indicators,” stated the Premier. According to Pavel Filip, being independent means not depending on one commercial market. That’s why Moldova has a free trade agreement with the EU and almost 70% of its exports go to the EU member states.
The Premier considers it is hard to be independent when the energy system is supplied from one source only. “We started to reduce the independence by projects to interconnect our system with Romania’s system. After the Iași-Ungheni gas pipeline, works to build the Ungheni-Chișinău gas pipeline will start this autumn and this will enable us to supply the whole country with natural gas,” he said.
Pavel Filip also said that from political viewpoint Moldova proved that it wants to be independent. “It is hard to obtain political independence and it is as hard to maintain it. We periodically witness external interferences aimed at influencing the political life in Moldova, but Moldova is a state that started to take attitude and to express its opinion at international level with more determination. Last year we said we will not tolerate pressure and intimidation. We took attitude when our citizens were insulted. Even if we are a small country, we want to be treated with respect,” he stated.
The Premier also referred to the security challenges. “This year we demanded firmly from the UN rostrum that the foreign troops should be withdrawn from the country’s territory. We approved changes so as to secure our information space by protecting it from foreign propaganda. For the first timeafter the armed conflict on the Nistru, we can control our border ourselves, including on the Transnistrian segment,” stated Pavel Filip.
He voiced hope that all the people will understand that only being kinder towards each other, more united and devoted to what we do, we will have a more powerful and independent Republic of Moldova.
Today the Republic of Moldova celebrates the 27th anniversary of the declaration of its independence.
