The EU’s decision not to offer the planned macro-facial assistance to the Republic of Moldova is rather political in character. Such unwillingness existed from the start, Prime Minister Pavel Filip was quoted by IPN as saying in the program “Friday with Anatolie Golea” on RTR Moldova channel.
“I remember that when we fulfilled the preliminary conditions and signed the memorandum for obtaining this money, there was opposition as to taking picture and to making the event public so that this was not perceived as eventual support for the current Government on the part of the European states,” noted the Premier.
He added Moldova should have received the first tranche long before the local elections. “The process was delayed and the invalidation of the local mayoral elections in Chisinau was used as a pretext not to offer the Republic of Moldova the money,” stated Pavel Filip.
As to the courts of law’s decision not to validate the local mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality, the Premier said this was a serious blow to the Government. “I continue to believe that this was a disproportionate decision of judges in relation to the violations identified during the campaign,” noted the Prime Minister.
Pavel Filip said the judicial system is independent and he cannot call the judges to tell them what decisions to take. He yet wondered if businesses can influence the judiciary.
On July 5, the European Parliament adopted a resolution by which it recommended the European Commission to stop payments in macro-financial assistance and budget support for Moldova.
