Passengers can claim higher compensation for flight delays or lost luggage

Airline passengers will receive higher compensation in cases of flight delays, lost, or damaged luggage. These provisions are included in a bill that was passed today by Parliament in its final reading, IPN reports.

As a result, minimum insurance requirements will be increased for air operators and aircraft operators conducting flights within, to, from, or over the territory of the Republic of Moldova. According to the bill’s authors, increasing the minimum insurance coverage will provide greater financial protection for passengers in the event of accidents, lost, destroyed, or damaged luggage, as well as postal shipments and cargo.

The minimum liability insurance for passengers in case of delays will also be increased from 5,346 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) to 6,303 SDR per passenger, equivalent to approximately 151,000 MDL, based on the exchange rate of the National Bank of Moldova.

For luggage, the minimum compensation will be increased from 1,288 SDR to 1,519 SDR per passenger, equivalent to 36,000 MDL. Regarding cargo transportation, the minimum compensation will be set at 26 SDR per kilogram.

The new provisions will come into force upon publication in the Official Gazette.
