The revenues of the state-run Moldova’s Railways come from freight transportation. In the case of passenger transportation, the costs are much higher than the incomes and the losses rise to 100 million lei a year. The company’s administration said they achieved many results this year, including related to the payment of salaries, but they have yet a lot to do, IPN reports.

The company’s director general Iurie Topala told a news conference that when he took over, Moldova’s Railways had debts and salary arrears. In three years, the situation improved and the employees will soon receive salaries on time. This month they transferred money for paying a part of the salaries for November. The company’s administration is having negotiating with the Railway Trade Unions Federation so as to increase the salary coefficient of each employee of the railway system by 35%. Currently, the average salary of an employee of Moldova’s Railways is 4,500 lei.

Iurie Topala noted that this year they extensively repaired two high railway lines for unloading inert materials at the stations in Drochia and Comrat. Such works haven’t been done since 1994. Also, the speed restrictions for about 30 segments of railroad on a distance of 18 km were reduced. There was repaired the only railway tunnel of the country that is situated on the 155th km, near Mateuți.

Next year the company plans to repair 600 wagons that will be provided for economic entities that use the services of Moldova’s Railways and will renovate four D1 diesel trains.

After the news conference, the company’s administration presented ten new vehicles of the 30 that will be bought. The cars will be distributed to all the railway stains of the country so that the specialists intervene to deal with faults in the shortest period of time possible. The official distributor in Moldova sold the Dacia cars at a special price. The total cost of the three types of new cars amounts to almost 8 million lei and their configurations meet the requirements.
