PAS presents bill on merger of prosecutors’ offices

A group of MPs of the Party of Action and Solidarity registered a draft law on the creation of the specialized prosecutor's office – the Prosecutor's Office for Anticorruption and Combating Organized Crime.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office and the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases will be liquidated, IPN reports.

In a press briefing, MP Igor Chiriac said that the initiative comes to strengthen the architecture of the state institutions that are meant to combat grand corruption, political corruption, including organized crime, in a more coordinated way.

The new specialized prosecutor's office will be created immediately after the publication of the law in the Official Gazette.

"There will be a period during which the prosecutor general will designate a person who will hold the position of head of the newly created prosecutor's office on an interim basis," said Igor Chiriac.

The draft law is to be discussed during public consultations.

The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office Veronica Dragalin on several occasions stated that no plausible or convincing arguments were presented to justify the need for such a merger. In his opinion, it is obvious that the merger is aimed at removing her from the position of chief anticorruption prosecutor.
