The Constitutional Court (CC) on Thursday will pronounce on the intention of MPs of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) to amend Article 70 of the Constitution. If the PAS bill is approved by the Court and is then adopted, the Constitution will envision the incompatibility of the seat of MP with any public post, IPN reports.
More exactly, by the submitted bill, the PAS MPs aim to amend Article 70, paragraph 1 of the Constitution. Currently, this provides that the status of MP is incompatible with any other paid post, except for teaching and scientific activities.
The sponsors said the bill to amend the Constitution was designed because there are provisions that are excessively restrictive with regard to the work of MPs.
“In the Republic of Moldova, the substitution of “any paid post” with “any public post” as regards the incompatibility of the seat of MP will guarantee the exclusion of the building of a large class of “career politicians”. The work of MP should not be considered a profession. Article 60, paragraph 1 of the law on the status of MP provides that Parliament is the representative body of the people. Consequently, the MPs should represent the people, including professional groups,” stated the PAS MPs.
In this regard, according to them, the possibility of having private occupations in arts, medicine, consultancy and other areas will hamper the phenomenon of “career politicians” which is manifested by political isolation.
