PAS MP: Accession to EU means adherence to world of peace and welfare

The EU candidate status will offer the Republic of Moldova the chance of democratizing the state and of modernizing infrastructure due to the access to additional European funds, said MP of the Party of Action and Solidary Lilian Carp. According to him, the Republic of Moldova does not want a privileged position in relation to other EU candidate states and will work to do the reforms agreed with the European partners. For their part, representatives of the opposition said that among the conditions imposed on Chisinau by the EU is the justice sector reform that is stagnant, IPN reports.

Among the conditions imposed by the EU on Moldova are the fight against corruption, the justice sector reform, de-oligarchization, the fight against organized crime, ensuring of greater involvement of civil society in the decision-making process. The parliamentary opposition said Moldova’s entry into the EU is a very long process when the justice sector reform is stagnant or even backslides.

“The candidate status that will be probably granted to us does not mean entry into the EU. The accession process can last for many years. Turkey has been a candidate since 1999, while Serbia for about 12 year. North Macedonia is also waiting for its turn. We and Ukraine will not be an exception. We can stay in a row for 20 more years. The European Union imposes conditions. In the justice sector reform, we do not make progress, but take steps backward. The recently modified laws reversed what has been done until now. The law on the prosecution service was designed under the aegis of the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission. But later PAS came with a series of amendments that were citizen, including by the Venice Commission,” MP of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists Grigore Novac stated in the Special Edition on the public TV channel Moldova 1.

The representatives of the government are more optimistic in this regard. According to them, the obtaining of the accession candidate country status is an enormous opportunity for improving the quality of life and for modernizing infrastructure.

“The accession to the EU means adherence to a civilized world. President Macron is the supporter of an enlarged European Union. Four-five years ago, the enlargement was out of the question. The anti-enlargement discussions no longer prevail. They now speak about the enlargement of the EU. No one wants the Republic of Moldova to be given particle bonuses. We know exactly the weaknesses of the Republic of Moldova. But it should be clear that the accession to the EU means adherence to a world of peace and welfare. We will have access to funds. When the quality of life improves, we will repay the money offered to us for modernizing infrastructure,” stated PAS MP Lilian Carp.

The European Commission last week recommended the European Council to grant the EU candidate status to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. A final decision is to be taken in the EU summit of June 23-24.
