The municipality of Chisinau is becoming more polluted and dirtier, said members of the group of the Party of Action and Solidarity on the Chisinau Municipal Council. They accuse mayor Ion Ceban of lack of view on waste management and inability to implement relevant projects proposed by municipal councilors, IPN reports.
In a new conference, the deputy head of PAS group Zinaida Popa said the municipality of Chisinau daily produces about 600 tonnes of garbage that is taken to the waste dump in Țânțăreni. “But the waste dump in Țânțăreni will be too small in seven years. Respectively, the Chisinau City Hall will have to look for another place for storing waste. Regrettably, neither the cleanup company “Autosalubritate” has a clear long-term view on waste management. Mayor Ion Ceban, if he wants to make progress on the issue, should familiarize himself with the national waste management strategy and agree an action plan so as to follow the same principles as the Ministry of Environment,” stated the PAS councilor.
The councilors suggest creating a municipal waste sorting line at the initial stage. The PAS group drafted several decisions that are supported by most of the CMC councilors. “Autosalubritate” is to be enstrusted with the task of designing the scheme for collecting and transporting the sorted municipal solid waste.
Zinaida Popa said Chisinau annually produces over 200,000 tonnes of waste. Only 7-8% of the recyclable waste is sorted and recycled. Over 90% goes to the waste dump in Tânțăreni. “That mixture of methane produced by the organic and plastic waste stored at the waste dump at high temperatures is flammable and can cause an ecological disaster in the region near the Țânțareni dump,” she stated.
Roman Roșca, secretary of the PAS group on the CMC, accused Ion Ceban of aiming to borrow €23 million for buying garbage trucks for “Autosalubritate” instead of thinking strategically and taking action to solve the problem of waste. “Ion Ceban wants to act as in the case of buses – to spend citizen’s money to improve his image without having a view,” he said, noting the mayor does not know where the waste from Chisinau will be taken in seven years.
The PAS councilors demanded that Ion Ceban should fulfill the promises he made to the citizens of Chisinau or should seek help if he experiences difficulties.
Ion Ceban announced a news conference centering on the waste issue for today.
