Party of Regions denies having subscribed to call to Council of Europe

The Party of Regions didn't subscribe to the call to the Council of Europe to recommend the Moldovan authorities to reduce the election threshold to 4% for political parties, as before amendments were made to the Election Code. The position was stated in a communique issued by the party after it was enumerated among the supporters of the call. The communque says the Party of Regions considers that it can pass the election threshold of 6%.

Contacted by IPN, the chairman of the Socialist People's Party Victor Stepaniuc, who initiated the call to the Council of Europe, said that his earlier statements were understood incorrectly. The extraparliamentary parties that he named among the supporters of the call, including the Party of Regions, confirmed their support verbally, but haven't signed anything yet because the letter is being edited. Victor Stepaniuc reiterated that it remains open for signing.

The leader of the Party of Regions Mihail Formuzal didn't answer the phone to comment on the situation.

On May 10, Victor Stepaniuc told IPN that a number of extraparliamentary parties are preparing a call to the Council of Europe at the suggestion of the Socialist People's Party and that some of the parties announced their support for this call, including the Party "Moldova's Patriots" led by Mihail Garbuz, the Party of Regions headed by Mihail Formuzal, and the Social-Democratic Party led by Victor Shelin.
