Electoral contestants failed to report at least 14.9 million lei in campaign expenses, according to a monitoring report by the NGO Promo-LEX.
The report, published on Thursday, shows that most unreported money, or 74.82% went to organize public events such as concerts. Two competitors, the Democratic Party and the Liberal Democratic Party, exceeded the 5% percent limit allowed, which could have triggered expelling procedures. At least six electoral competitors spent unreported money to hold a total of 181 concerts, 7 dance parties, 2 campaign launch events and 2 concerts abroad. At least 91 artists performed and the aggregate unreported costs amounted to 11.1 million lei.
Nine electoral contestants failed to report advertising expenses to an amount of at least 728,200 lei. Ten contestants did not report a total of 397,700 lei in travel costs which were used to cover an estimated 100,000 km. Other unreported expenses included activists' fees, costs of campaigning abroad, rent costs and communication costs.
The electoral competitors overall reported 116 million lei in campaign expenses, which equaled their reported income. Compared to the 2010 parliamentary elections, campaign costs rose by 3.55 times.
