Parties allowed to spend 7.5 million lei on campaigning for referendum

The political parties and movements that will participate in the campaign preceding the referendum will be allowed to spend for the purpose no more than 7.5 million lei ($690,000) each. The cap was set on Tuesday by the Central Election Commission, Info-Prim Neo reports. The CEC also decided that voter lists shall be compiled by the local authorities and reported to election authorities until August 5. CEC Secretary Iurie Ciocan said the number of voters eligible to participate in the referendum would also be announced on August 5. All the 30 political parties and movements registered with the Ministry of Justice are qualified to campaign for the referendum. To do so, they need to submit a formal application to the CEC July 12 through August 4. From the moment of their formal registration, the parties will be allotted free advertising airtime on the national television, will be able to post advertising on private channels and participate in electoral debates, etc. It hasn't been decided yet whether polling stations would be opened in the so-called security zone, but CEC Secretary Iurie Ciocan says the support of the Government and the OSCE Mission will be sought to ensure that electoral proceedings can unfold normally there. Moldova will hold a constitutional referendum on the way of electing the president on September 5.
